Kunst Raum Stadt – Art in public space

Kunst Raum Stadt (Art Space City) stands in the program of the Kunstraum Dornbirn Association for commitment to art in public space. This includes the preservation of existing permanent installations from the collection and the expansion of the city display in actual as well as in virtual space.

Sculpture in urban space
The sculpture park was initiated and organized in 1996 by the Sculpture Garden Association Dornbirn, founded by Walter Fink, former chief culture editor at ORF Vorarlberg. Sculptures by the Vorarlberg artists Herbert Albrecht, Walter Kölbl, Christoph Lissy, Herbert Meusburger, Kurt Matt, Willi Kopf and Gottfried Bechtold were positioned on the grounds of the Rundfunkhaus in Dornbirn.

After the Association was dissolved, parts of the collection were donated to Kunstraum Dornbirn in 2013. In 2014, the collection was enriched by a sculpture by Esther Stocker, which is located in the Dornbirn Municipal Garden on the grounds of the inatura Natural History Museum. In 2017 the installation Kritische Masse (Critical Mass) by Steinbrenner/Dempf & Huber was installed at the Sonderpädagogisches Zentrum in Schulgasse 40 in Dornbirn’s city centre and was purchased by the City of Dornbirn at the initiative of Kunstraum Dornbirn.

The collection will be expanded in the long term through permanent sculptural works, but also through temporary realizations in interplay with exhibitions of national and international artists in the assembly hall.

Public space experienced virtually – augmented reality in Dornbirn
The augmented reality project launched by Kunstraum Dornbirn and the city of Dornbirn in 2021 represents a new exhibition format that expands public space to include digital space. With the free wikar app, visitors can move independently through the city and experience exhibitions made up of digital sculptures.

After Erwin Wurm’s presentation in summer 2021 of sixteen works, each of which was designed for its respective location in Dornbirn and re-translated in virtual space Wurm’s idea of “one-minute sculptures” and his everyday objects transformed into sculptures, Eva Schlegel will realize her moving digital spheres at selected locations in the city beginning in June 2022.
